Matchroom Sport World Championship of Ping Pong

The Matchroom Sport World Championship of Ping Pong gets underway this Saturday live on Sky Sports HD from London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Watch out for Current Irish internationals John Murphy, Paul McCreery and the legendary Colum Slevin – the event will be broadcast on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th January on Sky Sports 2.

Players will initially compete in eight groups of eight in a double elimination format where two wins means progress to the last 32 while two defeats spells the end of the road.

With $20,000 handed to the winner from a total prize fund of $100,000 and 19 nations represented, spectators and TV viewers can expect a fierce competition.
With each competitor using specially commissioned traditional sandpaper hardbats rather than the sponge bats used in regular table tennis, the Matchroom Sport World Championship of Ping Pong will be more about skill, power and accuracy than spin.

“We are very excited to be staging this event,” commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn. “I believe that ping pong is a sensational sport that has a limitless potential to get bigger and bigger.

“We have 19 countries represented with players of all ages, both male and female, and this is something we will be looking to build upon in future years.

“Traditional table tennis players such as Andrew Baggaley, who has five Commonwealth Games medals to his name and represented Team GB at the London Olympics, will be up against players who have a proven track record in hardbat ping pong such as Graham Sandley and Denis Neale, so it should be a very interesting weekend.

“Ping pong is a game for all ages and nationalities and is a truly global sport. We want to bring the game to a new audience and with the entire event broadcast live on Sky Sports, I know this is something we can achieve.”

Tickets to the event will be available to purchase on the day at Alexandra Palace, priced £20 for adults and £10 for concessions per day. Saturday’s action begins at midday with play on Sunday commencing at 12:30pm.

Murphy & Mogey Claim Ulster Open Titles

The Ulster Open was staged in the Valley Leisure Centre on 8th December. Some top class table tennis was on display across all events, details and full results below

Men’s Open

The first surprise of the day came at the Last 16 stage, when Dariusz Zatlyny knocked out Ulster’s Peter Graham in four sets to progress to the Quarter Finals. Zatlyny came in to the event ranked 15 in Ireland and will have been delighted with his win over No.6 ranked Graham.  His run in the event came to an end with defeat to Ashley Robinson who negotiated a difficult path to the Semi-Final, with wins over Robbie Gavin and Mark O’Flynn as well as Zatlyny.

John Murphy was in fine form and he fought off a valiant Keith Knox in a fantastic  5 setter (9, 6, -6, -5, 8) before facing Robinson in the Semi-Final. He looked in fine form and progressed smoothly to the Final with victory over Robinson in straight sets. On the other side of the draw, Scottish International Niall Cameron looked a real contender for the title, particularly when recording a victory over Tibor Pofok at the Quarter Final stage. Cameron then came up against German based Irish international Gavin Maguire. Maguire had lost to Cameron in international competition previously, so would have been delighted with his performance here, claiming a significant victory in a high quality 5-setter, holding his nerve well to win 12-10 in the final set.

The Final was set, Maguire v Murphy. Maguire looked on course to claim the title, claiming the first two sets in some style. However National Champion Murphy fought back, displaying all of the resilience and quality that has deliver 5 Senior National titles. He levelled at 2 sets apiece before claiming the final set and the Ulster Senior Open title.

Women’s Open

In the Women’s Open, again there were some surprises in the early rounds. Following the late withdrawal of No. 1 seed Ashley Givan, youngster Rebecca Finn came through that section of the draw displaying top form in claiming a major win in the Quarter Finals over veteran Teresa Devaney. Devaney is on top form this season, so Finn who is ranked at No. 28 in the Senior Women’s Rankings will be delighted with this result and performance. She faced Jing Yi Graham in the Semi-Final and again will be delighted to have taken a set from a higher seed, but Graham was too strong and looked dominant as she progressed to the Final.

On the other side of the draw, Irish table tennis fans will be delighted to see international Amanda Mogey back on court following her recent injury troubles. Mogey looked to be in ominously good form despite her layoff, claiming straightforward wins over Emma Ludlow and Hannah Lynch-Dawson to set up a final with Graham.

This was a Final to savour, with the players swapping sets to set up a final set decider. The final set was a great test of nerve and again went all the way to the wire, with Mogey eventually claiming the Title with an 11-9 final set result.

Class II

Sparks flew in the Class II event with some fascinating match-ups and some top class performances. Hannah Lynch Dawson in particular moved quickly through the draw, with some impressive victories including an excellent 5 set win over Mark McAllister. She face Wexford’s Brian Devereux in the Semi-Final and almost pulled off an excellent win – claiming the first two sets before Devereux kicked up a gear to fight back and claim all 3 remaining sets.  In the Final Devereux faced Marcus McDonnell, who is enjoying a Renaissance in his playing career this season – McDonnell eliminated Zak Wilson in the last four. We had yet another 5 set Final in the Class II, with Devereux eventually claiming the win – making the long journey home to Wexford a little sweeter.

Veterans

In the Veterans event, it was that man Zatylny again in top form, knocking out both Tibor Pofok and Kevin Mackey to progress to the Final. Here he faced Pat McCloughan – and you guessed it, we had another 5 set battle on our hands, with Zatylny eventually claiming the title to cap off a pretty impressive day’s work.

Open Doubles

In this event it was Ulster pair Ashley Robinson & Keith Knox against Murphy and Cameron in the Final. In 3 closely contested sets (9, 10, 9), Robinson & Knox were crowned Ulster Open Doubles Champions.

Congratulations to all event winners and to all players who took part – as always thanks to the excellent volunteers of the Ulster Branch who delivered the event and in particular Jamie and Stuart McConkey and Tony Phillips.

Connacht

Connacht Academy opens it’s doors

The Connacht Junior Table Tennis Academy is a Programme designed by the ITTA / Connacht Branch to bring the Top Junior Players, showing commitment and potential, to one central location where they can train and develop their technical ability under the guidance of a Level Two registered coach.

The Academy was launched on Saturday 15th December 2012 with Twenty Six Junior Players from all parts of the Province invited to participate. Invitations were issued to players with Interprovincial Experience, National Tournament Exposure and those with aspirations to play at International Level. Invitations were also issued to Players who have the potential to excel at National Tournament Level in 2013.

The Academy has twin objectives:

·         To provide Advanced Training for Our Developing Provincial Squad, National Tournament Players, Current and Future Internationals;

·         To facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skill from Participants to more Junior Players at both Club and School level providing the capacity to increase participation in the sport.

The over-riding vision for the Academy is to increase participation of Table Tennis in Connacht within the current club and school structures, while participation in the Academy will develop the older and more experienced player technically, mentally and physically. These privileged players will be required to volunteer some of their time on club night doing one to one with a younger player thus helping their club coach develop a wider bunch of players

ITTA Director of Coaching – Arthur Brett

This Academy will not only enhance the playing ability of our Participants but will also assist in accelerating the skill development of the Sport at grass root level.  It is not the intention of the Academy to replace Club / School activities but rather to provide a Support System for the current structure facilitating the achievement of Excellence.

The Connacht Branch is delighted to announce that Mark O Flynn will take the role of Lead Coach supported by Level One Coaches from around the Province. Mark has a wealth of experience at both National and International level with a unique ability to communicate effectively with Junior Players.

Numbers will be capped at Twenty Six to ensure efficient and effective delivery. Four Rotational Places of the Twenty Six are being made available in the New Year as part of the Academy’s Talent ID programme. This aspect of the programme provides Junior Players within the Province the opportunity display their talent with a view to securing an Academic Place. The onus is on Club Leaders, Coaches, Parents and Schools to make representations on behalf of players. Representations can be made by emailing Michael Barry at [email protected] The Lead Coach must be satisfied that a Rotational Player is Academy Fit before acceptance.

The next Academy Session will take place on Saturday 22nd December 2012 at Manulla Community Centre, Manulla, Castlebar, Co. Mayo from 12pm to 5pm with the same batch of participants. The Academy will resume 2013 with the next two sessions taking place on Saturday 12th of January and Saturday 2nd February at venues and times to be confirmed in due course. The Academy will run on a continuous basis avoiding clashes with Provincial, National and International Events.

The Connacht Branch would like to thank the ITTA and particularly Arthur Brett for their invaluable support. The Branch would also like to thank Club Leaders, Coaches, Schools and Parents for all their hard work over the last two weeks in getting the project off to a successful start.

STIGA National Junior League 2012/13: Report & Results

All attendance records were broken at the STIGA National Junior League recently with 40 teams entered from all over Ireland forcing organisers to open a second venue to accommodate all players. In the end, 22 tables were used across both Colaiste Phadraig in Lucan and Roadstone in Kingswood, with 5 Divisions of 8 teams each in action.

Looking first to Divisions 4 & 5 which were played out in Lucan. There was a great atmosphere at this venue as many of the participants made their debut in a National event, although many would have placed in the STIGA Junior Challenger Series. Fantastic to see also was many of the ITTA funded participation projects in attendance, demonstrating a commitment within these projects to encourage their players towards tournament play. In Division 5, the Final match up was played out between John Bowe’sHigh School and Liam O’Ceallaigh’s Raven TTC. The high quality of table tennis on display here is testament to the work put in by both coaches, and we had several closely fought matches. In the end, Raven TTC claimed the title on a 4-1 score line. Expect to see more of these youngsters over the coming years. Division 4 was also a hard fought affair, and was a battle of the provinces in the Final as Leeside TTC C came up against Mayo C. This one went all the way to the wire, with the match resulting in a 3:3 draw and went to count back. After some deliberation by the excellent Tournament Referee Stuart McConkey, Leeside C (pictured) were crowned champions of Division 4. Coach Ben Haughton was delighted with his young charges and looks to be building a fine club in Leeside TTC. The main feature of these Divisions was the fun nature of the event, with excellent co-operation with our volunteer team and a great attitude from all players. Thanks to John Bowe, Tibor Pofok, Anna Kelly, Tommy Fitzgerald and Stuart McConkey who helped deliver a fine event for these developi

To Roadstone then for our top Divisions – a new venue for Irish table tennis and one we may use again – impressive playing conditions for our top Juniors and nice catering facilities on site for all to avail of. Division 3 was dominated by UCD – with UCD’s D & E teams battling for top spot. There is serious strength in depth in this UCD team, with the D team eventually claiming Gold in a 4:0 win. Division 2 was a battle between Kinneigh B and Leeside A. Leeside were in impressive form throughout, with Alan Walsh, Chloe O’Halloran and James Kelly all in top form as the Cork team claimed a 4:2 victory and the Division 2 Final.

All eyes then turned to the Division One match-ups, with many of the country’s top Junior Boys & Girls in action. This was a really strong division which featured 3 teams from Club Donic – an impressive representation for the Lucan based club. Donic A topped their group and faced off against UCD A in an all Dublin title decider. UCD had some fine talent on display including Li Shizhao, former Donic player returning to haunt his old team. Kevin Hutchinson, Tobias Wolff and Jack Donnelly also line out for UCD’s top team as they looked to justify their Number One seeding. Donic also had a strong line-up on show, with Conor Mullally, Tom Davis and Ciaran Kelly all in good form. UCD were focussed on the job in hand and dominated the match to record a 4-0 victory and retain their Premier Division title – congratulations to all involved at the club.

In summary, 2 of the 5 Divisional titles went to UCD, with a further 2 going South to Leeside TTC with one title to Raven TTC. However perhaps the biggest story here was the excellent entry of 40 teams, up from 14 teams last season and the volunteers of the ITTA rising to meet the challenge – Jamie McConkey, Tony Martin, Tony Phillips, Louise Long, Shay Logue, Arthur Brett, Joe Finnegan and Sam Logue were all instrumental to the delivery of a fantastic event in Roadstone – many thanks to the team, your work is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations again to all players who participated – we look forward to seeing you all again next season. Finally, thanks to sponsor Tommy Fitzgerald from STIGA Ireland who had shops in both venues and was worked hard all day!

Stiga Banbridge Junior Challenger Event – Results

A fantastic Challenger Tournament was held at Banbridge this weekend. Please click here for results.

Young players from all over Ulster assembled in Banbridge on Saturday to take part in a Stiga Challenger Table Tennis Competition.  The event is sponsored by the Stiga Table Tennis Equipment Company of Sweden through their Irish Importer,  Fitzgerald’s Table Tennis in Dublin.

Banbridge TT Club hosted the tournament in the King George V Pavilion, which was   jointly organised along  with Table Tennis Ulster (TTU).

Amanda Mogey Table Tennis Ulster Talent ID Officer was the event Referee assisted by Herbie Ross TTU Participation Officer,  Neil Magrath TTU Finance Officer, and Arnold Morgan Hon Sec TTU and head Coach with Banbridge TTC.

Mayor of Banbridge Cllr Junior McCrum attended  the event and welcomed the many visitors to Banbridge, including  many player’s parents and families present who had travelled from as far away as Donegall.  The Chair of the Irish Table Tennis Association  (ITTA) Mrs Pat Hunter also attended the event.

The emphasis was on fun and participation.  In Ranking terms, the top 15 Boys at Junior Irish level and the top 8 at Cadet level, and Girls ranked in the top 8 at Junior level or the top 5 at Cadet level were excluded from entering this tournament, the round robin format ensured players had as lots of games against opponents of all levels from novice through to some of the rising stars of the future in the sport.

The overall winner was James McGrath (Glenburn Club, Belfast) who just got the better of Coleraine player Adam Wallace in an exciting and entertaining match for the Division 1 top place.

Banbridge Clubwas well represented in the other sections, with players having great success in the Division 2 final, where Jordan Howard finished in 2nd place and Matthew McClimonds in 5th.

Division 3 was dominated by local club players with Joshia Burgess in 1st place, Emma Wylie 3rd, Nadia Benallal 4th and Jake Howard 5th

Division 4 saw a similar success for the local club with top positions going to Sophie Cairns 1st, and Scott Dale 2nd with Emma Shaw in 6th.

In Division 5, Aaron Peden played his way to a well earned 3rd position, with Robyn Willis 4th, Harry Patterson 5th, and Alex Jordan 6th.

For most local players this was their first opportunity to experience a real table tennis competition.  Many if not all the local players taking part were introduced to the sport at Primary School  by TTU coaches, with  some  later moving on to Banbridge Academy, Banbridge High or New Bridge,  having joined Banbridge TTC to continue training and playing their chosen sport.

Congratulations to  all the players taking  part, who will have gained a lot of  experience of competition from the event which training can not always provide.

Solid First Weekend for Irish at Womens British League

An Irish team full of youth and potential delivered some strong results at the Womens British League first weekend in Bristol over the past 2 days. The team, consisting of Sabina Devereux(pictured here with thanks to WBL Facebook Page – http://www.facebook.com/BritishTableTennisLeague), Emma Ludlow and Hannah Lynch-Dawson, performed strongly and have left themselves in contention for promotion in February when the League concludes in Doncaster.

The weekend got off to a perfect start for Ireland Ladies, with a 6-0 win over Morpeth Greenhouse. Next up was St.Andrews TTC who were a player down which immediately gave Ireland a 2 match lead. Sabina Devereux showed significant composure to defeat Lois Peake – this was Peake’s only defeat of the weekend and she was later named player of the tournament. Deverux claimed another victory over Standing and Ludlow and Lynch-Dawson closed out the match before Peake claimed some consolation for St.Andrews in a spectaular five-setter over Lynch-Dawson. On to the final match of the day and an eagerly expected showdown with Leeds Ladies – this was a closer match than the 5-1 defeat suggests, with all 6 matches proving tight. Lynch-Dawson claimed Ireland’s solitary victory here, but the team will target this match in February and look to overturn this defeat.

Sunday kicked off with a 3:3 draw with De Vere Netts – Devereux again performing well to claim two wins. Ireland then faced Halton TTC in the final match. Halton had top English veteran Sue Collier in their ranks and she performed as expected with two wins. It looked like a second defeat of the weekend at 3:2 down in to the final match. However, up stepped Emma Ludlow to deliver a performance that belied her inexperience at this level, claiming a five set victory over Denise McEvoy to claim a draw for Ireland.

So overall a solid performance from the team which leaves them in 3rd place just two points off the leaders Leeds Ladies. Coach Arthur Brett was happy overall;

” I think it was a very good performance with a young team, and we are very much in the mix going in to the 2nd weekend. All of the players performed well and will benefit from this experience. I very much expect the squad to be in contention for promotion and we will be working towards this event in February 2013.”
