Cowan Appointed New ITTF Partnerships Manager

Table Tennis Ireland is delighted to learn that former Irish International Jonny Cowan has been appointed to the position of Partnerships Manager for the ITTF, the sports global governing body.

Jonny has built up a wealth of experience throughout his career, both within Table Tennis and further afield, stemming all the way back to his days as a Senior International with the Irish Men’s Team. More recently, Jonny has gained recognition as the ‘Voice of Table Tennis’, having been the Head of Ceremories at both the London and Rio Olympic Games, as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Jonny’s experience in communications and marketing make his appointment a major coup for the ITTF. Notably, his past roles include the position of Head of Marketing for Everton Football Club, whilst he has also been involved with various projects concerning UEFA, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Premiership Rugby.

Farrell & McGlone take top prizes in Connacht

All of Ireland descended on Breaffy House Hotel Arena for the second staging of the 2017 Connacht Senior and Junior Open.

Play got underway promptly at 6.30pm on Friday evening with the Groups of the Women’s and Men’s Singles. There was a shock early on when UCD’s Katie McGlone (3rd Seed) was defeated by Susan Hanlon of Balgriffin.

Later on Friday the early stages of the Restricted Singles were played.
On Saturday morning it was the turn of the Cadet Boys and Girls. Ulster Open Cadet Champion Glenburn’s Lucy Craig was drawn against Sophie Early (Ormeau TTC) in the group stages in a match that had “close” written all over it. The girls didn’t disappoint with Sophie edging it in a five set thriller, 14/12 in the 5th. Sophie reached the final where she played Griffeen Valley’s Mia O Rahilly Egan, the current title holder. Another tight match saw Mia prevail 3/1.

In the boys event Ballincolligs Ciaran O Donoghue was the top seed and he lived up to his status by claiming the title and winning his first Irish Ranking event with a win over Kristijonas Dapkus (Bunninaden) in the final.

Meanwhile the Senior Ladies and Men continued in the knockout stages. Katie bounced back from her disappointment of the night before to beat Sabina Devereux in 5 sets in the quarters and then top seed Rebecca Finn in the semis. Waiting for her there was Mia who had ended Susan’s hopes in the semi-final. The two Leinster girls produced high quality table tennis and after sharing the first two sets Katie emerged the victor and claimed her first Connacht Senior Open title -14/12, 13/15, 11/7, 11/4.
This was Katie’s second title of the day, after winning the mixed doubles with club-mate Gavin Maguire over Mia and Alan Walsh. Mia also added to her Cadet title by taking the Women’s Doubles with Zofia Wawryzyniak.

In the Men’s Singles it was all to play for. Sam Logue, invoking memories of his upset win over Gavin in the 2014 Connacht Senior Open raced to a 2 nil lead in a last 16 encounter before the Irish Number 1 drew on his experience to take the match 3/2. In the opposite half number 2 seed Ryan Farrell made his way through the draw to take on 15 year old Alan Pattison in the quarter finals. Here Alan made Ryan fight all the way before losing 11/9 in the fifth. After beating Alan Walsh in the semis Ryan met Gavin in the final and as the clock approached 8.55pm and in another five setter Ryan came out on top winning 11/9 in the 5th and claim his maiden Senior Provincial Open Ranking title. It was not all gloom for Maguire however, as he took the Men’s doubles title alongside Tom Davis as well as the Mixed doubles alongside women’s champ McGlone.

Ryan’s success topped off a flawless day for the Howth player, as he took the U21 Mens Singles following victory over Davis in the final. Katie won the Women’s U21 against Nga so her Saturday haul was amounted to an impressive 3 titles.

In the Class 2 Singles Sam Logue came out as the winner with Brian Devereux the runner up. Earlier Brian had lost the Masters Final to Connacht’s own Kevin Devaney.

Sunday, the final day of competition saw the Disability Standing and Wheelchair titles go to Paddy Vaughan and Ronan Rooney respectively.

In the Hopes boys and girls categories there was some keenly fought matches and all players went home with a medal.

The Under 18 Girls group stages saw Nga nearly cause a shock against Katie as she led 2/1 and 7/3 before Katie fought back to take it in 5 sets. In the semis Katie met Rebecca and Katie won to make her 4th final of the weekend.

In the other half of the draw Mia came through and so set up a rematch of the Ladies Final. Katie got off to the quicker start and led 8:4 in the 1st set. However Mia won the next 7 points and with it the opening set. This spurred on the 14 year old Griffeen Valley girl as she continued her good form to take the next two sets and win the match 11/8 11/4 11/9 to reverse the previous evening’s result and take her first Connacht U 18 Open Girls title to go along with her Cadet title from Saturday.

In the Under 18 boys Julian Kelly, Ulster’s first year Cadet nearly caused a seismic upset in the morning’s group stages losing out to top seeded Charlie Fitzgerald 12/10 in the 5th set.  In the semi-final Charlie met Thomas Earley and Thomas defied the seeding’s to make it into his 2nd Junior Open final of the season

Here he met Dylan Grace who had beaten his own doubles partner Alan Pattison in the other semi. The final match enthralled the crowd and after losing the first two sets Thomas won a nail-biting third 16/14.

Dylan was not to be denied however and he took the 4th set and with it the title to make it two in a row after winning the Munster Open U 18 Boys 3 weeks previously.

In the U13 Girls Sophie and Silke lived up to their seeding by advancing to the final. Sophie was in impressive form throughout as she went on to take the match and the title by a 3/0 scoreline, despite Silkes effort and fine play.

In the Under 13 Boys, which was the final event of the weekend to come to a close, Cian Ross progressed to the final where he met Joe Sheard. Cian was attempting to make it a clean sweep for the Ballincollig club in the underage boys’ events, after Dylan’s and Ciaran’s wins. He did not disappoint and duly won his first Open title – A superb feat for Ballincollig TTC.

Finally a word of thanks to all who helped in making the tournament such a success and they include:

Tom Mitchell (referee), Niall, Kariem, Alison, Mairead, Liam, Kevin, Terry, Marc, Shay, James, Kacper, Ray, Michael, Carmel, Jacki and the umpires Jim Walker and Arthur Brett.

Also we would like to thank Rob Cowan for all his help prior to this event and Eoin Kelly and Arthur Brett for assisting us with some challenges that were positively overcome. Finally we would like to thank Breaffy House for supporting us with the addition of new lights installed prior to this event and their hospitality and professionalism, in looking after our guests.

TTI Launches New Online Membership System!

Table Tennis Ireland is delighted to announce the introduction of an on-line membership system. It has many benefits to TTI, Clubs and members. This has taken six months of work and planning, but we feel the system is going to help modernise the association and all of its processes. This system (called GoMembership) is used by many other sporting organisations and does the following things

1. Allows members to register and affiliate online – providing contact details to TTI and reminders to members when renewal is required.

2. Allows Affiliated Clubs to see their membership and organise it into teams, groups, categories etc.

3. Allows members to register for events (tournaments, training camps, coaching courses etc.) well in advance and also allows TTI to see who is registered

4. Provides a secure online payment system either by card or by bank transfer

5. Allows credentials and qualifications to be submitted and approved

If office staff can spend less time on basic administration, then we can devote more of our resources to club development and growing the organisation.

Please try the system straight away and affiliate for 2017 by clicking here!

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Members,

Now that the New Year is well started, I thought I would provide an update on Table Tennis Ireland. We have had some great successes in the last few months and we are ready to build and modernise the organisation. Certainly there have been challenges, but overall, we are in a strong position for 2017.

New Membership System

A new online membership system is going live on 1 February 2017. It is a great step forward and will allow TTI to modernise. I expect that it will reduce our costs, increase our affiliation numbers, improve our communications with members and facilitate clubs in their development. To see more, click on the link on our home page. This will be the only way to affiliate from now on.

Financial – Status, Funding, Allocation of Funds, Branch Finances

Although the accounts for 2016 are not yet unaudited, our cash position is strong and we met or slightly beat our 2016 budget i.e. made a small positive margin.

We have secured our grant funding for 2017 under three headings i.e. Core Grant, Women in Sport Grant and Club Development Grant – totalling circa €160,000. This is an increase from last year due to the results over the last few years and the great work of the office team (Mark O’Flynn and Dave Heffernan).

Other sources of funding are also important and we will apply for several more grants and supports including

1)The Capital grant to buy tables etc. which we can distribute to affiliated clubs

2)A Failte Ireland grant for a major event in Dublin

3)Affiliation fees which will be collected through the new membership system

4)Paralympic Grant

5)Sponsorship from Butterfly, Celtic Table Tennis and Thornton Sports

6)Donations, other grants and player supports that are under negotiation or expected

In 2017, funds will be allocated to developing the sport, building new clubs, strengthening existing clubs and increasing membership.

Last year, around €108,000 was required to fund our High Performance Program (elite international players). Table Tennis Ireland provided €25,000 of that with the remaining funds (over €80,000) coming from parents and players contributions. I am very conscious of the huge financial commitment of parents and players.

Finances at Branch level seems to be an issue that has frustrated their ability to fully achieve their objectives. I want to change that by providing funding from TTI to Branches while also agreeing with those Branches what activities and objectives will be supported by this funding. Funding, to a large extent, may be based on affiliations from the Branch area and will be dependent on Branches fulfilling agreed objectives. I am keen to ensure that, what is best done at Branch level is done there and that TTI does centrally, only what makes sense to be done centrally.

Events

This year sees the opening of the National Indoor Arena in Dublin (right beside the National Aquatic Centre in Blanchardstown). It is a huge, state-of-the-art venue, of Olympic standard. Mark and Dave, are working closely with the management of the venue to ensure we get to use this facility. They have even negotiated that we can store tables there and are expecting to develop a local club with support from the Arena. This venue will become an anchor venue for us and has helped us to secure the rights to host the European Championship Qualification 15 and 16 April (Ireland / Norway / Bosnia / Scotland). It should be a thrilling event and I hope to see you there, if you can make it.

The first event at the Arena will be the Junior Nationals on 25/26 March.

Unfortunately, we are continuing to see some weakening in our provincial events with the Munster Senior Open cancelled this year for the first time. I hope to discuss this with the Branches shortly. It is imperative that the provincial events are seen as an integral part of our calendar and competitions. We need to understand the dynamics that are leading to this decline and turn that around. Any thoughts on this should be provided to your Branch so that it can be part of our discussions.

Strategy – FIT-FOR-GROWTH

Over the last 18 months, the Board has been working on a new strategy for the period 2017-2019. We have released a draft to the Branches for their comment. We will also publish it on our website, but please provide your feedback through your local Branch.

In the past the Strategy was developed by a sub-committee of people with expertise in table tennis and also in business, operations and various other professions.  This time, the Board decided to take a more active part in the development of the strategy. We wanted to consider strategically where table tennis is, what the environment is and where we want to take the organisation. Both the previous Board and the current Board and the President has been involved through various stages of review.

The next stage is consultation with the membership, following which, the Board will finalise the Strategy and that will form the basis of our activities over the next three years. We believe that strategy is as much about deciding what not to do, as it is about deciding what to do. We cannot do everything and we must focus our resources and efforts in a way where all activities are aligned. For example, spending on Women-In-Sport, Club Development and the allocation of Tables should be geographically close so that they reinforce each other.

To view the strategy document please click here

I will be interested to hear your feedback through the Branches.

The Strategy is called fit-for-growth and the four key planks are

1)Restructure and modernise the organisation and strengthen governance

2)Develop a healthy and supportive culture

3)Establish new clubs and help existing clubs to grow and improve

4)Improve the financial strength and balance of the organisation

Women In Sport

You will have seen, on our website, the call for comment from Sports Ireland on how to encourage more women to take up leadership positions in sporting organisations. The initial proposal was to introduce gender quotas and to financially penalise organisations (above a certain size) that did not reach the quota. I attended a meeting just before Christmas with the Minster, Shane Ross TD, and fifty other sporting organisations. The Minister seemed to pull back from the idea of penalising where quotas were not met, but wanted more ideas on how to achieve increased female leadership. At the meeting, speaking in behalf of TTI, I noted that the previous chair of TTI was a woman and that our difficulty was in attracting volunteers of either sex, and that I had never had any complaints of a glass ceiling at TTI. However, I undertook to get the feedback of our members. To date I have received no feedback from any member or Branch.

As I said when elected to Chair, we cannot have a healthy organisation if we cannot attract both women and men to join. This is a crucial priority.

Participation

Most of our efforts in this area revolve around the Challenger series events and the like. We have not had an active Participation Director for some time now and this has limited us. We have the resources and strategy for increasing participation, by focusing on clubs, but we need a Director to provide leadership.

Paralympics

You all know of Rena’s success at the Paralympics in 2016. Rena is going to give it another shot at Tokyo and she has begun to plan her training programme with a view to achieving the glorious goal of winning a medal. We are also keen to encourage other Para players to take up the game and, for those already playing, to develop further. We will be providing some funding for monthly coaching sessions targeting a development squad at the CRC in Dublin. I am looking for a Para Director who could take up the mantle of ensuring we grow our Para membership and build on the success of Rena and others before her in achieving competitive success.

The following roles are available at TTI. In all cases there is support from other Board members and from the office staff. We have adequate resources and a firm framework of plans in all areas. So, this is a great opportunity to take up these roles to give back to Table Tennis, to enhance your CV and to get a great sense of achievement through working with other professional colleagues at TTI.

All of these roles are leadership positions.

1) Participation Director – Help us grow the membership

2) Paralympic Director – Help us attract more para players and put resources in place for development and integration with clubs.

3) Child Protection Officer – continue the good work of the outgoing officer in this critical area

4) Company Secretary  – As well as standard Company Secretary tasks, help us to improve our governance and compliance

5) Chief Technology Officer – We need your technical skills and vision to help us implement our digital strategy

If anyone wants to discuss any of these roles with me – please send an email to [email protected]

Masters Munster Open 2017

A high quality field provided some enthralling encounters in the Over 40s event. In the first knockout round, the defensive wiles of Rory Scott prevailed over the spin attack of Tibor Pofok on a scoreline of 12,-7,-10,8,10. However, Rory had no answer for the power game of debutant Philip Wallace in the semi- final.

Philip Shaw used his committed forehand drives to great effect against Daryl Strong in the  other semi-final. Several long rallies presented a great spectacle, but the players may not have thought so. Daryl was fortunate to win in the fifth. Team mates Phil and Daryl played a tremendous match in the final. However, Phil always had the edge in the final game, winning it 11-6.

The Ladies event provided a nail-biting countback at the group stage. Paula O’Neill scored a tremendous early win over Sharon. However, when Irene McNevin beat Paula later, Paula slipped from third place to fourth! Sharon went on to test Teresa to the max in the semi-final, just missing out in the critical exchanges at the close. In the final, Teresa was progressing favourably, leading 8-3 in the third. An innocuous edge ball seemed to disrupt Teresa’s concentration. Ger gained momentum, hitting forceful winners to both wings. Eventually, Ger ran out as a worthy winner on a scoreline of -6,7,9,4. Doubtless, Paula, Irene and Sharon will gain much confidence from their performances here. Let’s hope this heralds a sustained increase in the numbers of ladies playing in our events!

In the 50s, Pat McCloughan’s consistent top spin game from both wings proved too good on the day, beating Dave Pemberton to claim the title,-7,-9,7,8,7. Maestro Tommy Caffrey reigned supreme in the 60s and 70s. He beat Philip Shaw 3-1 in the 60s semi -final.Then, trailing 5-8 in the first, he skewered our bemused Secretary with a devastating burst of ten points from eleven to win 9,6,9 in the final. Subsequently, in a depleted 70s event, he beat Martin Pickles 4,7,-10,-9,4 to claim the spoils. It must be said that a flickering oil gauge indicator light disrupted Kieran Burke’s mindset for the entire day, coming, trying to play, and going. “Things can only get better, Kieran!”

We are most grateful to all at Wayside TTC for their contribution to a successful day. The efforts of all who helped with catering, umpiring, setting up, taking down tables and barriers, are greatly appreciated. Sharon, Dave and Brian should be pleased with the outcome overall!

Our best wishes go to our members who are coping with illness at this time.

European Round-up: November 2016

Welcome back to our monthly European Round Up, an article built to showcase our home-grown talent and their efforts in European Table Tennis Leagues. So let’s get started here we are in December and Christmas is drawing ever closer. In the build up to the holiday period our best players haven’t been taking their foot off the gas. All through November they have continued to scour Europe’s best leagues for crucial match practice. A busy month for a lot of them, this month we’ll cover Ashley Robinson and Alexander Gillen in France, Gavin Maguire and Zak Wilson in Germany and finally Paul McCreery in Belgium.

Let’s go with our usual format of starting with Ashley Robinson, Ireland’s highest world ranked player. Two outings with Saint Louis TT this month for Ashley and first up was a cliff-hanger with Chelles TT. Ashley raced to his first two wins in very strong 3-0 performances over Laurent Thomas & Sylvain Courtois. The team moved into what looked to be an unassailable 7-4 lead only for the team to get slightly complacent and be pegged back to a 7-7 draw. Ashley lost his final match 3-0 and said ‘I struggled with my concentration in the last match, I felt my head was all over the place and I really didn’t perform well at all’, a harsh lesson learned for the Clogher native. Ashley’s second match was yet again not a straightforward one, playing the league leaders Tours 4S you would imagine it would be a battle. Ashley’s team ran out 8-1 victors on the day with Ashley providing two wins. The first win versus Nicolas Gaudelas, Ashley was 1-1 and 9-4 down but using all his battling qualities he managed to win that set deuce and take the match in 4 sets. In the second match Ashley built himself a 2-0 lead over Lucas Rigault only to be matched again at 2-2. In what sounded a very tense affair, our man took the match 14-12 and sent his team on their way to a victory over the league leaders. Ashley stands with a personal balance of 8:5 going into the last weekend of the half season in December, impressive!

Staying in France, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Gillen is one of Ireland’s most exciting young talents. A man we don’t get to see on home soil nearly enough as he plies his trade in Hennebont going to school and training simultaneously. There were two matches this month for the young Irishman. An 8-5 victory for Hennebont versus Saint Pair Broqueville and Sasha was one of the leaders in the team winning two out of three singles. He beat Jean Michel Carquin in a 3-2 epic. Following that he took out Samuel Piret in a confident display 3-1. Sasha’s good form ended there and it was a pity for him that he couldn’t make it three out of three, he lost out to Julian Pasquette. Second match now and Hennebont were 8-3 victors versus Alfort JSA. This time out Sasha kept up his form and was successful in his first match against Nicholas Benchour Martin however, in his second match he lost out to Alexis Millot in a hard fought 3-1. One more match left for Sasha for this half of the season and Sasha’s team sit second in the division. He told us there is ‘an outside chance of promotion but they have been waiting for someone to do them a favour and beat a strong team from CAEN. Good luck Sasha!

From France, we go to Germany to revisit our National Champion, Gavin Maguire. 3 matches this month for Gavin with his team Medizin Magdeburg with a hiccup thrown in there. First up Gavin’s team played against Holzhausen, a team from Leipzig renowned for their large home support and the poor conditions for a team of their calibre. Gavin provided one win and one loss for his team in a 9-5 victory over Holzhausen. A 3-0 for and a 3-0 against versus Gregor Meinel and Philip Hoffmann respectively.Due to play a double match weekend against two of the weaker teams in the league, Gavin was struck down with a viral infection on the Friday night, one day before the scheduled matches. The viral infection led to Gavin damaging his oesophagus and trapping air in his chest, leaving him bed ridden in hospital in Germany for 5 days. A dramatic turn for the worse and an unfortunate way to end November for Gavin. Luckily enough Gavin’s team managed to come through with wins in both matches even in his absence. The Dublin man was quoted ‘It was awful timing really, not only was it a double match weekend but it was also against two of the weaker teams in the division, I would have been confident to drive my personal score up and now I sit at 6:6 with one match against two of the strongest players in the league left’. Very frustrating for Maguire indeed and we’ll see how he gets on in that match in December, good luck!

Following on from that, as usual we stay in Germany to check in on Zak Wilson. This month Zak was involved in three matches for his club Hannover 96 against, SC Marklohe, SSV Neuhaus and SG Schwartz-Weiss Oldenburg. In each of the three contests Zak’s team came out on top in 9-6, 9-6 and 9-3 victories respectively. As for Zak, against Marklohe Zak had a fairly straightforward day, in his first he lost in his own words a ‘clinical three nil loss’. The loss came against Nikolai Marek who is a former second Bundesliga player, so no shame there. In the second Zak was involved in a 3-2 win but stated he was always confident of getting the win. In the second team SSV Neuhaus 9-6 Zak was extremely unlucky not to take a scalp aganst the team’s number one Florian Reinecke, after having a match ball Zak just couldn’t get over the line and lost out 3-2, a missed opportunity. Against the teams number 2 Zak was assured as ever in his second match running out a 3-0 winner against Niklas Beliaev. Lastly, in the third team match of the month Zak got another two wins on the board for his team and his personal balance. A 3-1 over Andre Stang the number one and a 3-0 over Hendrik Z’Dun. Zak told us that in his first ever match in Germany he lost against these team and the same players. He said he was ‘delighted to get his revenge and put another two wins on the board’. The Glenburn man goes into December with a super score of 12:4 and his team sits in third position in the league with a game in hand against the league leaders, December should be interesting!

Our last player to visit, Paul McCreery in Belgium. Paul was in action again for C.T.T Tiège in Division 1 of the Belgian League, this time against Rooigem-Gent A. With Tiège vying for promotion to the Super Division, every match is proving critical even at this early stage of the season. Belgian League plays with a slightly different format to Germany and France, the players play four singles per match provided that match goes that far. Paul got off to a good start this time with decisive 3-0 win over Jan-Pieter Corteel. Unfortunately, he followed up a convincing win with a convincing loss losing to Ken Waegeman 3-0. The trend continued, Paul won his next match against Peter Nijs 3-0 but followed up against David Henkens in a 3-2 deuce in the last thriller loss. The rest of the team didn’t live up to expectation and the team were victims of a 5-11 defeat. ‘Although I wasn’t overly happy with my 2/4 wins this weekend, I can feel my level improving and have a clear idea of what I need to work on before my next matches. Also, if we can win our 2 home matches in December, we can still leave ourselves well positioned for promotion coming into the second half of the season.’ A quote directly from Paul and with two matches left in December, I look forward to hearing about Paul’s steady progression back to top shape!

That’s it for another month, another successful month for the Irish players out in Europe and I look forward to writing about their exploits in December before they take a well earned and probably not too long, break over Christmas. Hope you’ve enjoyed reading the European Round Up and if you have any questions for the players please don’t hesitate to comment or send them in to the office and we’ll endeavour to include them in the next article. Until next time!

Daryl (1)

Strong prevails once more in Ballymena

This Masters event provided several memorable matches during an Action packed day at Ballymena. Defending champion, Daryl Strong, prevailed once more in the Over 40s. He overcame Brian McRandall in the final on a scoreline of 11-5, 12-10, 11-3. However, Brian can be pleased with his overall performance. Having beaten Rory Scott in an early round, he emerged victorious in an absorbing semi-final with Dave Pemberton. Trailing 8-10 in the fifth, he hit a service return winner to gain the momentum, going on to win 12-10. Obviously, his match sharpness had been well honed after a recent training session with Gavin Maguire!

Worthy of note was a remarkable scoreline of 24-22 for Brian Devereux over Willie Cherry in their first game at the group stage! The restricted 40s event was won by Rory Scott, who also won doubles with Dave Pemberton. John Fall and Francis Shirley were runners up.

Gillian Richardson won the Ladies event, beating  Jackie Devine in the final.

Dave Pemberton came through to claim the 50s title, beating Pat McCloughan on a scoreline of 7, -7, 5, 10. The 60s event was diminished by late withdrawals and time constraints. Norman Nabney was disappointed to concede a walkover at the semi-final stage. Barry Dickson, reigning champion, put up a resolute defence of his title, beating Jim Storey in his semi-final. However, he succumbed in the final to Brian Finn, despite beating Brian at the group stage.

Oliver Adamson won the 70s event, beating Liam Perris in the final. Again, several leading contenders had withdrawn through injury or illness. Nonetheless, Balbriggan old boys had a successful as well as an enjoyable sojourn!

Our thanks to Norman McBride and Brian Orr for organising matters. The willingness of players to umpire when called upon helped to keep proceedings to a tight schedule.
