90 YEARS OF ULSTER TABLE TENNIS

90 YEARS OF ULSTER TABLE TENNIS

Table Tennis Ulster is celebrating a special birthday on Sat 23 Nov 2013 during the Ulster Open Championships being held in Queens PE Centre, Belfast.  It will be 90 Years since two of the trophies being played for this year were first used.

To mark the occasion, a number of historic Trophies are being re-introduced  to highlight this landmark, with the Men’s and Women’s Singles Cup which were first played for in 1923/24 season,   The two cups have significant  links to Belfast City Council, The Office of Lord Mayor, and  a Member of  Parliament. These cups were presented to Ulster Table Tennis when the sport was in its infancy, and were in use for almost half a century.  The Harcourt Challenge Cup and the Hospital Challenge Cup have now been refurbished and will be kept permanently on display as a reminder of the proud sporting heritage.

Table Tennis in Ulster was organising competitions including the Ulster Open some years before the formation of the International Table Tennis Federation in 1926, and 14 years before the formation of the Irish Table Tennis Association in 1937. Pioneering figures from the early days of Northern Ireland table tennis were instrumental in the formation of both of these organisations and set the foundations for the sport world wide.

The Harcourt Cupfor Women’s Singles title was first presented to Mrs. H. Roberts, 1924-25, and used continuously for 43 years, being last won by Miss V Lambert 1965/65. The Cup was originally donated by Sir Robert Harcourt, a former Lord Mayor of Belfast and local politician. The Cup is being presented by Mr John Harcourt, the son of Sir Robert Harcourt.  a former Director of the F E Harcourt and Co, as well as a former member of the Belfast Corporation for 22 years, and founding member of the Railway Preservation Society.

The Hospital Challenge Cup, for Men’s Singles, was presented by Thomas Somerset and first won by R. McCleery, 1923-24, and then used continuously for 43 years until to last won in 1965 by Dubliner Jimmy Langan. Sir Thomas Somerset DL was a major linen manufacturers, and Chairman of the Northern Counties Committee of the London, Midland and Scottish Railwayand a Unionist Member of Parliament.   Mr Mike Nesbitt MLA will present this Cup

Two former World Champions have picked up this trophy along with the Ulster Open title.   The legendary Victor Barna holder of 22 World Titles and Richard Bergman holder of 7 World Titles have both been winners of this event.    Belfast’s Deputy Lord Mayor will attend this event, as will a representative from the Ulster Unionist Party in view of the links to the two donors of the cups concerned.

The Tyrell Cup for Men’s Doubles last won in 1962 by T. Caffrey and J. Matier will also be presented on this special occasion.  It will be presented by Irish table tennis legend Tommy Caffrey, the last recipient of this cup 51 years ago.

The McCullough Cupfor Women’s Doubles, last won in 1967/68 by Misses Joan Fitzsimons and Dorothy Taylor, will be presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor Alderman Christopher Stalford.

BACK to the PRESENT!!

Top athletes from across Ireland will take part in this event on Saturday and will be competing to have their names added to the long list of winners, and claim their place in the history of Ulster Table Tennis.  In doing so, they will be forging a link from the birth of the sport, right up to the present day.  Some may have their names inscribed onto the same cup which bears the names of two giants of the sport, and former World Champions.  Just how unique is that?!

Maguire delighted to reach Ally Pally

Irish qualifier Gavin Maguire says he couldn’t be happier to have made it to the World Championship of Ping Pong 2014, and beating two Irish greats en route to Alexandra Palace makes it even sweeter.

The 23-year-old from Dublin beat Colm Slevin and Paul McCreery in Irish qualifying for the tournament, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on January 4 and 5, but hopes the duo can still join him via the ‘Last Chance Saloon’ qualifying event in Essex on January 2.

“I couldn’t be happier knowing that I am going to Alexandra Palace in January,” said Maguire. “I watched the whole event last year on Sky Sports and loved it.

“To qualify in the way I did makes it even sweeter, beating an Irish great like Colm Slevin, and current Irish great Paul McCreery made the victory all the sweeter. I just hope now they can qualify in the final chance qualifier as they deserve a place in Ally Pally.”

Maguire will find out in December who his first opponent will be in the double-elimination group stage. He joins Welshman Dean Cundy in London, who qualified on the same day as 2009 Irish Champion Maguire.

Reigning champion Maxim Shmyrev was involved in the Russian qualifiers, which took place November 8-10. Shmyrev will return to defend his crown at Alexandra Palace, and will be joined by qualifiers Dmitrij Popov, Ksenija Tulenkova and Vladislav Kuzenko.

Using traditional sandpaper rackets, the World Championship of Ping Pong is a throwback to the early days of table tennis.

Live on Sky Sports in the UK, 64 of the world’s best players will take part in the two-day tournament with a substantial prize fund and tickets are on sale now at SeeTickets.com (search ‘Ping Pong’).

The tournament takes place over four sessions, with a double elimination group stage featuring eight groups played out on eight tables on the Saturdayafternoon before the last 32 enter a knockout stage played across two tables in the evening.

On Sunday morning the last 16 will be whittled down to eight quarter-finalists, who will proceed to the evening session to battle it out for the 2014 World Championship of Ping Pong crown.

Master Six Nations 2013

Thanks to Brian Finn for providing this excellent article by Dave Gibbons – congratulations again to all involved in Ireland’s hosting of the Six Nations Veterans championships..

The Six Nations Veterans championships were aptly summarised by Joe Hickey (President, ITTA) as a wonderful weekend of table tennis played with spirit and passion. England came out on top of the medal honours, with a tally of 5 gold and 1 silver. They were narrowly prevented from a clean sweep by Scotland, who took gold in the Over 40 Men event. Scotland added silver to their tally in the Over 60 Team event, which positioned them in second place on the medal honours. Joint third place went to Wales and Ireland, who each netted two silver medals.

Comments from various players (names withheld in case of lawsuits!), which captured this spirit and passion, included:

Don’t bother bringing in the expedite rule, it’s an ambulance I need!

No matter where the ball is, it can be smashed.

Play from the heart.

Sure you wouldn’t see such good footwork in River Dance.

Session 1 Highlights

Over 40 Men:

Overall honours in the Over 40 Men event were effectively settled in the first session, when Scotland faced England (defending champions), with Scotland coming out on top (3-2).  It was clear from the get-go though, that this was going to be a hard fought contest.

The first match between Scotland’s Brian Wright and Chris Clinton of England saw both players give onlookers a lesson in speed, spin and control. Having narrowly lost the first two sets, Brian hunkered down to come from behind in the third set to clinch it 12-10. Composure regained, Chris won out in the fourth set.

The second match, between Gerry Campbell and Adrian Pilgrim, continued in the same vein; with little to separate both players as they swapped point for point. Honours shared after the first two sets, Gerry pipped the third 13-11. Gerry started the fourth set with all guns blazing, quickly building a commanding 5-1 lead. Adrian clawed his way back to level the set at 8-8, but the Scot held his nerve to take the set 11-8.

With the overall match now level, victory in the doubles was paramount. The first set went to Scotland; a spectacular backhand smash by Brian, played from his toes, setting the tone for this do-or-die battle. The pendulum then swung in England’s favour, who took the second set 11-3. The change of ends for the third set marginally favoured Scotland, who clinched it 12-10.  Buoyed up, the Scottish duo powered on to an 11-6 win in the fourth.

Exhibition table tennis continued in the fourth match, between Gerry and Chris. On paper the 3-0 result, in favour of Gerry, reads like a one-sided affair; however, a much closer reality was played out on the table.

Job done, with 3 victories now in the bag for Scotland, but still all to play for in the fifth and final match; a match that saw uncompromising play from both sides, with England coming out on top.

Also in the opening session, Wales gambled by not playing Tomasz in the singles against Isle of Man; a gamble that did not pay off and would ultimately cause Wales to lose out on finishing in the medals. A tense first match, saw Isle of Man’s John Magnall hold out to win 13-11 in the fourth set. The second match, another tense affair, also went to Isle of Man. A promise of a turn around emerged in the doubles, which saw Steve and Tomasz overcome a speed wobble in the 3rd set to win outright 3-1.  Steve went on to win his next singles against Liam Chan, leaving the overall match delicately balanced at 2-2. With words of encouragement from Tomasz (“no pressure but you’ve got to win this one!”) still ringing in his ears, Mark fought hard, only to let the first set slip to 12-10 to John.  John wrapped up this match in straights, putting paid to Wales’ gamble.

Over 60 Team:

Fortune favoured Scotland in their opening session against Ireland. Norman Nabney got Ireland off to a promising start with a 3-0 win over Pat Duffy. Geoff Salter levelled the score with a win over Martin Pickles by the same margin, before Audrey Robinson edged Ireland in front with a 3-1 win over Carol McLean.

The men’s- and mixed- doubles proved to be the turning point in the match.  Geoff partnered Charlie Brown in a tense men’s doubles against Norman and Martin. With the first and fourth sets going to deuce and two other close sets, Scotland ground out a hard-fought 3-1 win.  The mixed doubles match could not have been closer. Geoff and Carol took the first set 15-13; Norman and Audrey responded with an emphatic 11-5 win in the second. The Scots pairing quickly returned to form, taking the match with a 12-10 win in each of the next two sets.

With Scotland now in front for the first time, Geoff was under pressure to keep them there as he faced Norman in the penultimate match. Norman piled on the pressure, winning the opening set 11-7. Geoff kept his cool – taking the next 3 set to win match and give the outright win to Scotland.

Martin set about a damage limitation exercise in the final match against Pat. A straight sets win to Martin, kept the final result to a respectable 4-3 in favour of Scotland.

Session 2 Highlights

Over 50 Men:

On the back of a close 3-2 win over Scotland in the first session, Ireland’s over 50 men continued their positive play into their second session match against Guernsey. They established a commanding 2-0 lead against Guernsey going into the doubles, which they won in straights.  Guernsey battled hard, but lost the remaining two singles.

Scotland’s Tam Lawlor had to work for every point to overcome the deft touches and long pimples of Wales’ Tony Collins. Coming from behind, Tam levelled the first singles match 2-2 and went on to take the final set, a tense 11-8. The second singles was equally tense, with Wales’ Ray Goulding taking the honours. A slow start in the doubles had Scotland on the back foot for the first time in this session.  Wales fielded a steady combination, in Tony and Steve Eades, who held out to win 3-0. Fortune swung in Scotland’s favour in the next singles, a cracking (some might say niggly) four setter, which teed-up the session for a fifth-and-final match to decide the spoils. Having won the first two sets, a momentary lapse in concentration saw Ray slip into an 8-3 deficit in the third set.  Digging deep, Ray clawed his way back to clinch it 12-10, giving Wales the overall win in the process.

England’s performance in the opening singles in this session, a convincing 3-0 win, set the tone for the remainder of their Over 50 Men match against Isle of Man. England came out on top without dropping a set in any of their  matches; a result that belied Isle of Man’s efforts.

Over 40 Women:

Ireland’s Ros Carpenter played out of her skin in a humdinger match against Sanja Clements of England. In an open, hard-hitting match, Sanja took an early lead with an 11-7 win in the first set.   As the crowd of onlookers gathered, Ros levelled the match with an 11-6 win in the second set. Sanja responded by winning the next set by the same margin.  The intensity in play continued into the fourth set, which Ros won 11-7. Sanja sealed a hard-fought win, with an emphatic 11-4 win in the fifth set. Match of the day!

Session 3 Highlights

Over 40 Women:

Typical of the tournament, the Over 40 Women match between Ireland and Scotland was played against a backdrop of friendly banter, mixed with steely determination. Sharon got off to a strong start, taking the first set against Catherine O’Neill in her stride. The second set was a tense affair, with Catherine narrowly losing out 14-16. Catherine was unlucky in the third set, having been up 6-3, only to let it slip 11-9. Gillian kept up the momentum, grinding out a 3-0 win over Fiona Kinloch. The victory was sealed in the doubles, a close 3-1 win by the local pairing. With Gillian winning the next match, the pressure was on Fiona in the final singles to avoid a whitewash….she didn’t disappoint.

First blood went to England B against Guernsey; Rose Rainton winning her singles match against Sam Kershaw in straights. The second match was a lesson in ball control, peppered with explosive back- and fore-hand exchanges from both players. Guernsey’s Dawn Morgan held a slender lead throughout, taking her match against Marilyn Bawden 3-0.  The Guernsey pairing kept up the pressure, taking the doubles match 3-1. Unperturbed, Rose battled hard to level the match with a 3-2 win over Dawn. The final match between Merilyn and Sam was yet another tense affair, with an 11-9 win in the fifth giving overall victory to England B.

Sonja Clements opened proceedings in the England A v Wales match with a 3-0 win over Marilyn Morgan.  Sue Collier kept the pressure on Wales, winning her match against Regina Grech by the same margin. Another flawless display from the England duo saw them secure the win over Wales with a 3-0 result in the doubles, before going on to close out the remaining singles without dropping a set.

Over 50 Men:

Ireland picked up from where they left off with Keld Jaksland winning the first singles in straights against Wales’ Ray Goulding. Terry Dolan ground out a hard fought victory over Tony Collins, with a tenacious display to clinch the match in the fifth. No surprise, but the doubles match was an equally hard fought exchange, with Wales coming out on top. Having won the first set and going in front 9-3 in the second, Tony looked a dead cert to take the next singles and level the overall match. However, with a ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ attitude, Keld pulled out all the stops to take the second set 13-11, before going on to take the third and fourth sets 11-8 and 11-9, respectively. Terry closed out the final singles against Ray with another steely performance, which saw him clinch the first set 11-9, followed by 11-4 and 11-8 wins.

Session 4 Highlights

Over 60 Team:

Whilst England were comfortable winners of the Over 60 Team event, the battle for the runners-up position was a much closer affair, which was effectively settled in the fourth session when Scotland met Wales. Two of the first three singles matches went in Scotland’s favour.  Geoff Salter and Charlie Brown furthered Scotland’s lead by taking the men’s doubles with a narrow 11-9 win over Tony Needham and Paul Collins in the fourth set. Paul partnered with Kath Mitchell Dawson to rekindle Wales’ hope with a win over Geoff and Carol McLean in the mixed doubles. Matters were settled in the next match between Geoff and Tony, which saw Geoff come out on top with a 13-11 win in the third set to position Scotland in an unassailable 4-2 lead.  Paul narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in a close three-setter against Charlie in the final singles.

Over 50 Women:

Ireland’s Helena Dennett opened proceedings with a tight 12-10 win over Christine Watkins of Wales in the first set, before settling into her stride to win the second and third sets 11-4 and 11-5.  Having been snapped up from the International transfer market by Wales, Irene McNevin was keen to get off to a good start. Point for point exchanges ensued in her opening singles against Teresa Devaney. At 6-6 however, Teresa stepped up a gear to take this and the next 2 sets.  Helena and Teresa went on to take the doubles and the remaining singles.

Over 40 Men:

Pat McCloughan put Ireland into an early lead over Isle of Man, taking the opening singles against Liam Chan in straights. In the second singles, an uncharacteristic mistake on a forehand shot caused Kevin Mackey of Ireland to let the second set against John Magnall slip 11-9.  Kevin soon regained the form he had shown earlier and closed out the match 3-1. A nervous start to the doubles saw Pat and Kevin Devaney drop the first set 5-11. Tactical advice from Kevin Mackey at the change of ends helped the Ireland duo regain their focus and go on to win the doubles in the fourth.

Having reached deuce in the first set against Liam, Kevin pulled out all of the stops to come from behind twice to win the set 15-13; going on to take the next two sets without fuss. Pat’s trademark slow forehand loop was called into action as he overcame a first set set-back to win the second. Fortune favoured John’s defensive style in the third, before the pendulum swung in Pat’s favour for the final 2 sets; clinching the fifth 11-8.

Session 5

Over 70 Team:

Had there been a prize for sheer stamina, Ireland A would have been outright winners. Between them, Ted Mahaffy and Jim Sheehan contested over 1,800 points over the weekend!  To the bitter end, both players gave it their all. Jim’s opening singles against Liam Perris of Ireland B typified the dogged determination exhibited by each of the over 70 teams. 2-1 down going into the fourth set, Jim eked out a 17-15 win to bring the match to a deciding fifth set, which went in Liam’s favour.  Having levelled the match with a 3-0 win over Ron Drain, Ted partnered with Jim to take the doubles 3-1. Liam was unlucky not to level matters, losing the next singles 11-13 in the third set. Despite having victory over Ireland B already in the bag, Jim was determined to give the onlookers their money’s worth in the final singles match against Ron.  True to form, Jim put in another five setter; this time coming out on top.

Over 50 Women:

The 0ver 50 Women event was not settled until the final session in which defending champions, Ireland, met England A. In the opening singles, Teresa Devaney came from behind to pinch the first set for Ireland against Sandra Rider 12-10.  With dogged determination, Teresa urged herself on to take the second 11-9.  Sandra responded by building an unassailable lead early in the third, winning it 11-7.  Sandra retained this form for the start of the fourth set, but let it slip to allow Teresa draw level at deuce; it proved to be a temporary slip though, as Sandra held out to take this set 13-11.  Buoyed on by the local support, Teresa kept a closer rein on proceedings in the fifth set, changing ends a mere point down. Neck and neck it remained until 8-8, when an unforced forehand error by Teresa gave Sandra the lead, which she held to win out 11-9.

Jenny Harrison levelled the scores for Ireland, winning a controversial singles match against Elaine Sayer. With the first set under her belt, Jenny faltered in the opening exchanges of the second set; despite battling hard to regain the lost ground, Jenny narrowly lost this set 9-11. The next set remained on a knife edge throughout, though Elaine pipped it 16-14. With so much at stake, it was not surprising that tensions on both sides were high; 7-10 down in the fourth set, Jenny drew on all of her reserves (and plenty of encouragement from her teammates to ‘stay focused’) to win the next 5 points in a row.  Jenny kept up the pressure in the fifth, but let an early lead slip by the change. Patiently and with increasing consistency, Jenny worked her forehand attacking shots into the remaining rallies; eventually running out winner at 15-13.

There was little to separate both pairings in the doubles, with every point being hard fought for; each player putting in an impressive array of quality winners.  The first set went to the Ireland duo, 16-14. England played a steady game to take the next three sets.

In a do or die singles, Teresa succumbed to Elaine’s patient play. A smashing cross court forehand earned Elaine an 11-9 win in the first set.  Elaine won the next set 11-5. Unrattled, Teresa eked out an 11-3 win in the third, but Elaine sealed it in the fourth with an 11-6 win. Overall victory to England.

An Irish team led by Coach Shay Logue travelled to the recent Stockton 4* Junior event in England with medals on their mind. STIGA Masters Leinster Open 2013

STIGA Masters Leinster Open, 2013.

An absorbing day’s action was provided at Lucan by the 42 competitors in the STIGA Masters Leinster Open on Saturday, 19 October. Dave Pemberton was the outstanding performer on the day, winning the Over 40s and  finishing runner-up in the 50s. Central to his progress was winning a hard fought third set 18-16 against Pat McCloughan, having been 2-7 down at one point in this semi-final match. This seemed to inspire his victory over Tibor Pofók in the final on a scoreline of 9,-6,10.-6,8. However, his exertions seemed to catch up on him in the 50s final. Although suffering from a cold, Csaba Szollosi triumphed 15-13 in the fifth set in a fascinating duel between wily defence and spin attack. Csaba was 1-2 down in sets, and he trailed Dave at 8-10 down in that final set! Dave went on to win a close fought fifth set victory in the Doubles final with team mate Kevin Mackey.

The final of the 60s event saw maestro Tommy Caffrey play a flawless fifth set to beat Norman Nabney 11-1 therein. Mind you, Norman had been down 0-2 in sets earlier!! Ted Mahaffy defeated Jim Sheehan in the final of the 70s. Tom Burke made a welcome return to action, and Michael Keogh won the Consolation event.

In close encounters of the Ladies kind, Gillian Richardson emerged victorious over Susan Keating in the crunch match, -10,13,-9,11,5!! All of the other sets in this Round Robin were lost by the narrowest 2 point margin, bar one. This competitive edged augurs well for coming tournaments.

Tibor Pofók won the Restricted 40s, while Dave Gibbons won the Consolation event, beating John Conway in that final. Philip Shaw registered a good win over Terry Dolan in the 50s, while it was really nice to welcome Norman Lovie back to active service.

Thanks to Denis Kelly, Jack O’Meara, Bryan Morrison, Greg Keogh, Sharon Brien and Dave Gibbons for all of their efforts in helping the event to run smoothly. Sponsorship from STIGA is always greatly appreciated. Finally, we extend our best wishes to Ros Carpenter and Willie Cherry at this time.

Mucka triumphs at Stiga David Lloyd Junior Challenger

A fantastic Challenger Tournament was held at the David Lloyd Centre, in Dundonald on Saturday 12th October 2013.

Young players from all over Ulster assembled in Dundonald to take part in a Stiga Junior Challenger Table Tennis Competition.  The event is sponsored by the Stiga Table Tennis Equipment Company of Sweden through their Irish Importer, Fitzgerald’s Table Tennis in Dublin.

Gervis Knox was the event Referee and was assisted by Allen Robson and Arnold Morgan.

The emphasis was on fun and participation.  In Ranking terms, the top 15 Boys at Junior Irish level and the top 8 at Cadet level, and Girls ranked in the top 8 at Junior level or the top 5 at Cadet level were excluded from entering this tournament, the round robin format ensured players had as lots of games against opponents of all levels from novice through to some of the rising stars of the future in the sport.

Division 1 was hotly contested with both Ballymena’s Dawid Mucka and Coleraine’s Adam Wallace winning four matches each in this round robin format. Adam Wallace recorded excellent victories in straight sets against Vladislav Chuklev, Conor Nugent, Jordan Scott and Matthew Cherry, however lost to Dawid in a close 8-11, 9-11 match. Dawid recorded fine victories over Jordan Scott, Matthew Cherry, Conor Nugent, Adam Wallace however lost a thrilling 8-11, 12-10, 10-12 battle to Ballymena team-mate Vladislav Chucklev. The result went back to count-back with Dawid just pipping Adam to the post for first place. Newtownabbey’s Conor Nugent did well to finish in 3rd position and finished as the highest U13 boy during the day. Along the way he defeated Vladislav Chucklev, Matthew Cherry and Jordan Scott.

Division 2 also went to count back with Malone College’s Jamie Veighey and David Lloyd’s own Jack Hudson winning four matches each. Due to the fact that Jamie defeating Jack in their match, Jamie finished as group winner with Jack finishing in 2nd position. John Dong (Malone College) did well to finish in bronze medal position.

The result in Division 3 was more clear-cut, with Gareth Hughes (Donegall Rd TTC) winning all his matches including a tough 3 set battle against Remick Ryzanoswki. Banbridge’s Matthew McClimonds has shown great improvement in recent months and battled hard to finish in silver position with Glenburn’s Remick Ryzanowski finishing in bronze position.

Conor Smith (Bangor) completely dominated in Division 4 defeating all his opponents in straight sets including a win over Ulster U13 Girls number 1 Lucy Craig (Glenburn). Lucy did well to finish in 2nd position with David Lloyd’s Joe Warden finishing in 3rd position. Special mention must go to Glenburn protégée Sophie Earley, who finished in 4th position in this group and 22nd overall out of 34 opponents. At only 7 years old, she defeated several opponents much older than herself, losing only 9-11 in the final set against Ulster U13 Girls number 1 Lucy Craig and is a good prospect for the future.

Kaiwen Liu (Valley) remained undefeated in Division 5 with newcomer Angus McConnell from David Lloyd finishing in 2nd position. Eight year old Max Skelton from David Lloyd excelled to finish in 3rd position.

Division 6 was hotly contested by a contingent from David Lloyd, all of whom are six years old! Harry Hudson, younger brother of Jack, finished in first position in this group defeating Michael Campione in two straight sets. At six years old, these players displayed fantastic table tennis for their age and are real prospects for the future.

For many players, this was their first real taste of an Ulster competition, many of whom are relatively new to the sport. Tournament referee Gervis Knox praised the players on the standard of play and how each player conducted themselves throughout the day.

Thanks go to all the players and parents for turning up on the day and to the many volunteers who helped throughout the day.  Thanks also to Allen Robson and the management at David Lloyd for hosting the tournament at their excellent facilities.

The Ulster teams have just returned from Weekend 1 from this year’s Junior British League which was held at Lilleshall Sports Centre in Shropshire, England.

Four teams in total travelled to this event with 4 NPCs. For many of the young squad travelling, this was their first chance at competing for Ulster outside of Ireland.  The standard of play throughout all divisions was extremely high and our players were tested in every single match.

Our most experienced team competing over the weekend was the Ulster Girls ‘A’ comprising of Lucy Elliott, Erin Thompson and Rebecca Finn who were competing in Division 1. With Annalise Walker joining the senior ranks and Emma Ludlow now competing for the Irish Girls team, two members from last season’s ‘B’ team stepped up to the mark to join Lucy Elliott in the top team.

The girls played fantastically all weekend with all three girls contributing to ensure vital wins over their opponents remaining undefeated as a team throughout the weekend. The girls currently sit at the top of the table going into the second weekend and are on course to win the Division. At number 1 Lucy Elliott was majestic winning 100% of her matches throughout the weekend. At only 13 years old, Rebecca Finn showed excellent composure and a high level of play throughout to win 8 out of her 10 matches against much older opponents. Erin Thompson chipped in well with 4 wins, winning a vital encounter against Draycotts Lauren Evans to ensure a victory for Ulster over second placed Draycott.  Due to their performances, high standard of sportsmanship, dress, team spirit and co-operation, the girls won ‘Girls Team of the Weekend’ which is a fantastic achievement.

The Ulster Girls ‘B’ team mentored by Ashley Givan found the tough going in Division 3 and inexperience showed at times. For all three girls, this was their first outing at this event. The girls did well to secure a draw against Wales ‘B’ which was the highlight for this team.  Emma McSorley performed best for the team winning two of her matches with both Elizabeth Cathcart and Megan Carson winning one match each. The girls lost many matches in the fifth set and will be looking to turn these close defeats into wins in the next weekend. The girls will have learnt a lot from this weekend.

The Ulster Boys ‘A’ team currently sit in 5th position in Division 3b winning two of their matches and losing 3 close matches. The boys lost agonising 2-4 defeats to Urban TTC and Fursion 1 and had chances to secure the draw or even win these matches. Kris Foster competed well throughout the weekend winning 50% of his matches including an impressive win over Lawrence Stacey from Guernsey. Eric Shekleton won four of his matches with Jonathan Porter winning three matches. If the boys can reverse 2-4 losses against Urban TTC and Fusion 1, they should have a good chance of making the top 3 in this Division.

The Ulster Boys ‘B’ team also found the going tough in Division 4a. The trio of Ryan McConkey, Harry McGoldrick and Ethan Duffy registered a good win against Crusaders 4-2 but were unable to add any more points to the board and currently sit in joint 5th position in the Division. Ryan McConkey as the most experienced player in the team lead well from the front winning 50% of his matches. Harry McGoldrick in his first competition outside of Ireland performed well to win three of his matches. Harry lost a series of close five set matches and this experience will help him for the next weekend. At only 12 years old, Ethan Duffy struggled against his much older opponents, some as old at 18 years of age. Ethan performed to the best of his ability and can take many positives from this trip.

Three players from Ulster represented the Irish teams at this event also with the female duo of Emma Ludlow and Hannah Lynch-Dawson competing in the Premier Division. Both girls excelled against the best junior players from Great Britain with Emma winning 60% of her matches and Hannah winning 40% of her matches.

Zak Wilson featured for the Irish boys side in Division 1 winning 80% of his matches. The Irish boys incidently won ‘Boys Team of the Weekend’. It is a fantastic achievement for two sides from Ireland to win these awards.

Congratulations to all of the players that competed over the weekend and thanks go to the four coaches, Amanda Mogey, Ashley Givan, Stephen Slater and Kieran Reilly for coaching and looking after the teams over the weekend.

Solid Start at JBL and Team of the Weekend!

The Irish Junior Boys and Junior Girls have just returned from Weekend 1 of this season’s Junior British League. The event took place in the fantastic Lilleshall National Sports Campus in Shropshire, with 6 player and 2 NPC’s travelling.

Results After Weekend 1

The Boys Team of Ryan Farrell, Tom Davis and Zak Wilson were led by Coach Dave Buckley. Davis and Farrell were part of the team that won promotion from Division 2B last year, so all eyes were on them to see how they would perform in Division One, just one rung below the elite Premier Division. They did not let Irish supporters down, with some fantastic performances that have left them right in contention for promotion. Zac Wilson was an excellent addition to the team – he will be delighted with an 80% win ratio.

The Boys hit the ground running, claiming 6-0 and 4-2 victories in the first two matches against Ellenborough and St.Mary’s respectively, before a very tight 3:3 draw with London Academy rounded off Saturday’s play. With two games on the Sunday, the pressure was on the Boys to at least secure one win to maintain their place towards the top of the table. This was delivered in style against Rotherham Scorpions, with Zac Wilson clinching the win for the team against Liam Rowson. The final match was to be the toughest, against Bournemouth, boasting Hugo Pang and Jamie Trevilion amongst their squad. Tom Davis and Zac Wilson notched wins, but Pang and Trevilion were dominant, securing 2 wins each and inflicting the first defeat to the Irish. Davis pushed Trevilion all the way in a thrilling 5 set match, just losing out 11-8 in the final set. He will no doubt target this game in the return fixture.

This left Team Ireland in clear 2nd place overall, just off the unbeaten Bournemouth. Their efforts were recognised when awarded Team of the Weekend by the Competition Organisers. They will be delighted with this allocade, but all focus will be on Weekend two in February 2014 and securing promotion to the Premier Division.

Coach Dave Buckley stated

The boys winning team of the weekend was a great bonus and there should be fair recognition of this as 1996/1997 was the last time this feat was achieved – all three performed really well and were very sporting both on and off the table.”

The Girls team of Hannah Lynch Dawson, Chloe O’Halloran and Emma Ludlow were led into battle by Coach Louise Long. A draw and two wins on Saturday left the girls in an excellent position going into Day Two. Playing in the fiercely competitive Premier Division, the girls will have been delighted with this start, which included a big 5:1 win over Wales and a 6:0 win over Draycott.

Overnight thoughts turned to two pivotal clashes with Burton & Uxbridge and St.Andrews. Ireland lost 6:0 to St.Andrews – a tough scoreline for the Girls who will be disappointed with the result having pushed their opponents close in each game.  O’Halloran in particular was unlucky to lose out to Letitia McMullen in a tough 5-setter. The Irish had a short amount of time to recover before facing Burton – who had 4 wins from 4 at this point. In Emma Torkinton, Burton have a fine player and she showed her class in collecting two wins. Hannah Lynch Dawson and Chloe O’Halloran also notched wins for the Irish in a much improved performance as they just lost out 4:2.

This leaves the Irish Girls poised in 3rd place with eyes firmly set on moving up the table on the final weekend. They will fancy another shot at the unbeaten Burton and will also be out to avenge a 6:0 loss to St.Andrews – watch this space, as 2nd place is within reach here for our talented squad.
