Your Story Matters – International Women’s Day Celebration! Claire Nelson

My table tennis journey began at the age of nine when I first tried the sport at an after-school club. I was instantly drawn to the fun of the game and the challenge of learning new skills. Wanting to improve, I joined Glenburn Table Tennis Club, where I was fortunate to have dedicated coaches who invested countless hours in developing my abilities. Their guidance helped me progress to competing for both Northern Ireland and Ireland at local and international tournaments.

Over the years, I spent most weekends traveling across the UK for Grand Prix events, and I proudly represented Ireland at the European Championships, and many other prestigious competitions. My passion for the sport led me to play for Poitiers in France, competing in the top league there. Training was a huge part of my development, and I dedicated many of my summer holidays to intensive training camps in Sweden and China to refine my skills.

One of the proudest moments of my career was representing Northern Ireland at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games—an experience I never would have had if I hadn’t picked up a bat all those years ago.

Now, as a Level 2 coach, I work with the Ulster Development Squad, helping to nurture the next generation of players. Watching young athletes train with dedication, develop their skills, and achieve success in competitions is incredibly rewarding. I see in them the same passion and determination that once drove me, and it’s fulfilling to support their journey.

To all the women out there—if you ever get the chance to pick up a table tennis bat, go for it! This sport opens doors to incredible opportunities, from traveling the world to making lifelong friendships. Table tennis is for all ages and abilities, so why not give it a try? You never know where it might take you!
