European Youth Championships Finn-tastic Day 8

Cadet Girls Singles

Rebecca Finn stole the show today as she cruised to a straight sets victory over her aptly named opponent Liz LETHAL who is ranked 132, Rebecca kept composed right the way through the match, for a 13 year old with still two years as a Cadet she performed fantastically. She now moves into the last 64 to face the Serbian Izabela LUEULESKU ranked 17 in Europe.

Cadet Girls Doubles

Rebecca Finnt hen teamed up with her partner Katie McGlone in the doubles and together they dominated the opening set, it all came much closer in the second but Team Ireland took it 12-10 to take a 2-0 lead. The Lithuanian pair were not about to roll over and give up, Rudzinskaite who is ranked 59th in Europe showed her experience and helped her partner take the third and fourth 11-5, at 7-7 in the fifth set it all seem very much to play for but the Lithuanian’s won 3 points and now had 3 match points. Katie and Rebecca didn’t play a conservative game, they pulled back 2 points and at 10-9 with Lithuanian serving for the match Rebecca attacked the first ball and the girls took the point 10-10. The girls held their nerve and took an 11-10 lead, Lithuania to serve again and this time Katie did a fantastic return of serve into the backhand corner and that was it, game and the match the girls go into Round 2 the last 32. To watch this tantalising match for yourself it was recorded and is available here.

Cadet Boys Singles

Owen Cathcart had a tough draw as he faced the European Number 55 from the Ukraine, KANNUNNIKOV had too much experience and beat Owen in straight sets, Owen now moves into the consolation.

Illia KANUNNIKOV (ER:55) (UKR) beat Owen CATHCART 4-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-5, 11-2)

Cadet Boys Doubles

It was the end of the road for the Cadet Doubles pairing of Zak Wilson and Alexander Gillen who lost 3-1 to Scotland’s Christopher Wheeler and Yaser Razouk.

Christopher WHEELER (ER:53) / Yaser RAZOUK (SCO) beat Zak WILSON / Alexander GILLEN 3-1 (11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6) in Round 1 of the Cadet Boys Doubles.

Junior Girls Singles

Ashley Given faced English European Ranked 157 Maria Tsaptsinos, the two girls swapped sets till 2-2 where Maria got her break and won two in succession and took the match 4-2. Ashley’s attention now moves to the consolation.

Maria TSAPTSINOS (ER:157) (ENG) beat Ashley GIVAN (ER:162)4-2(11-8, 6-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4)

Junior Mixed Doubles

Hannah Lynch-Dawson and her English team-mate Igor MORAIS were beaten in straight sets by the Russian pair in the second round of the Junior Mixed Doubles.

Sadi ISMAILOV / Ekaterina GUSEVA (RUS) beat Hannah LYNCH-DAWSON / Igor MORAIS (ENG)3-0(11-7, 11-7, 11-9)

Junior Girls Doubles

Ashley Givan and Hannah Lynch-Dawson got a tough draw as they faced a German/Polish alliance ranked 21 and 50, they put up a good fight in the 2nd but lost out 12-10, they lost out in straight sets. Emma Ludlow and Chloe O’Halloran paired up and faced Slovakian pair the “VERONIK’s”, they were beaten in straight sets.

Yuko IMAMURA (ER:21) (GER) / Agnieszka KACZMAREK (ER:40) (POL) beat Hannah LYNCH-DAWSON (ER:274) / Ashley GIVAN (ER:162) 3-0 (11-4, 12-10, 11-4)

Zala VERONIK (ER:116) / Nika VERONIK (ER:208) (SLO) beat Emma LUDLOW / Chloe O’HALLORAN 3-0(11-6, 11-3, 11-7)
