Policy and Governance

Clear guidelines and standards that support transparency,

Table Tennis Ireland (TTI) maintains a comprehensive and transparent governance framework designed to support the responsible growth, safety, fairness, and professionalism of table tennis across the island of Ireland. The association’s policies ensure a strong foundation for ethical conduct, compliance with legal standards, and best practice in sport administration.

Governance & Strategic Oversight

TTI’s Governance policies provide the structural backbone of the organisation, outlining roles and responsibilities for the Board, directors and staff, and detailing compliance requirements aligned with national and international sport governance standards. These policies support organisational integrity and strategic decision-making processes.

Sport Ireland Governance Code Compliance

As a Sport Ireland-funded National Governing Body, Table Tennis Ireland formally adopted the Governance Code for Sport — a voluntary Code of Practice developed and overseen by Sport Ireland to promote good governance across sport organisations in Ireland. Organisations adopting the Code commit to embedding best-practice principles including leadership and strategic direction, exercising control, transparency and accountability, effective operations, and ethical behaviour.

TTI’s Board certified its compliance with the Code’s principles in December 2021, and the association has maintained compliance through ongoing governance reviews and self-assessment cycles, consistent with Sport Ireland reporting expectations. TTI also completes and publishes the required Public Statement of Compliance and Comply or Explain forms, demonstrating ongoing commitment to these governance standards and to the high expectations tied to public sports funding.

Heritage

Our Journey Through Time and Achievements

Table tennis in Ireland has a rich heritage stretching back over a century. While organised table tennis activities were evident regionally before the mid-20th century, the modern governing body traces its formal establishment to 1937, when the Irish Table Tennis Association was formed, later trading as Table Tennis Ireland (TTI).

The Irish association brought together regional bodies from across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, creating a unified structure for competition, promotion and representative activity across all 32 counties.

Growth & Competitive Milestones

From its earliest years, TTI’s Annual National Championships became central to Irish competitive life, with national titles contested across age categories and performance levels. The Roll of Honour project preserves records of champions dating back to the Association’s founding in 1937.

Irish players such as Jimmy Langan, Colum Slevin and Tommy Caffery are celebrated as legends of the sport in Ireland. In recent years, players including Colin Judge have achieved notable world ranking success, particularly in para table tennis.

Anniversaries & Legacy Events

The Association marked its 75th anniversary in 2012, reflecting on decades of growth, international competition and community engagement across the sport. Celebratory events recognised pioneers, international players, and volunteers whose contributions shaped Irish table tennis.

Para Table Tennis & Inclusion

Ireland has a proud legacy in para table tennis, with athletes like Paralympic medallist Anne Ebbs contributing both on the court and as a pioneer in broader disability sport development. Her successes—including multiple medals at Paralympic Games—and work founding the Paralympic Council of Ireland highlight the sport’s broader social impact.

Modern Era

In the 21st century, TTI has continued to innovate and expand. Strategic initiatives focus on grassroots growth, club development, coaching education, safeguarding, and digital engagement. Recent developments include new club membership pathways, enhanced support structures for volunteers and coaches, and strengthened links with Sport Ireland and international bodies.

Today, Table Tennis Ireland stands as a vibrant national body, fostering competition from novice to elite level while championing inclusion, excellence, and lifelong participation.

our mission:

At Table Tennis Ireland, our mission reflects our commitment to growing participation, building strong community foundations, and elevating the sport’s profile nationally:

Develop the sport through local branches, clubs, and schools to attract and retain players, coaches, and volunteers.

Create enjoyable and fulfilling opportunities with events that cater to all ages and abilities.

Promote the sport widely by leveraging innovative digital technologies, championing our players, and raising our national profile.

Provide strategic governance and leadership to guide and support the sport’s development across the island.

These mission pillars are reflected throughout our Strategic Plan 2022–2028, forming the core objectives that guide TTI’s long-term growth, investment, and action.

Our Vision:

Our vision is simple yet ambitious:

“A Sport for All, a Sport for Life!”

We want to see table tennis played widely across Ireland through a large network of self-sufficient, community-based clubs. We aspire to a sport recognised not only for its fun, inclusive, and accessible nature but also as a performance and Olympic and Paralympic sport, offering pathways from beginner participation through to elite international competition.

This vision underscores our belief that table tennis enhances physical activity, social connection, and lifelong engagement in sport.

Our Value:

At Table Tennis Ireland, our values guide our culture, decision-making, and behaviour at every level — from governance and staff to volunteers, clubs, and members:

Transparency – We operate openly and communicate clearly.

Inclusivity – We welcome all ages, abilities, genders, and backgrounds.

Excellence and Professionalism – We strive for high standards in everything we do.

Respect and Fairness – We treat everyone with dignity both on and off the table.

Receptive to Change – We embrace innovation and continuous improvement.

Fun – We champion enjoyment as a central part of the sport experience.

These values are embedded in the Strategic Plan and reaffirmed across annual reporting, events, and operational priorities.
